Raising Kids Catholic
And now for another episode of "Raising Kids Catholic." Coming out of mass this morning:
Kid #1: Mom, what's a "chalice"?
Me: It's the cup, the gold one that the priest holds up with the blood of Christ in it.
Kid #1: Oh.... Wait! Isn't that the Holy Grail?!
Me: Yes, that's the Holy Grail. (Seeing where this is going...) But not the actual one. The one you saw today is just a chalice.
Kid #1: But why do they make such a big deal out of it? The Holy Grail, the real one, that is.
Me: Because the original chalice held the blood of Christ. So finding the actual cup is a big deal, since it held something so sacred.
Kid #1: (Thinking) But why don't they make a big deal about the plate, you know, that holds the bread? 'Cause that touched Jesus, too, didn't it?
Me: (Silent. Dumbfounded.) I have no idea.
Kid #3, from the backseat: Probably beacuse God knew that "Monty Python and the Holy Breadplate" just wouldn't have the same ring to it.
